Richmond Symphony Orchestra names new music director

The Richmond Symphony Orchestra has named Maestro Andrés Lopera as its new music director. Lopera has entered into a three-year contract with RSO. He currently serves as the Associate Conductor of the Columbus Symphony and Music Director of Columbus Youth Symphony Orchestra, and will commute from Columbus to Richmond.

“Maestro Lopera brings unbounding energy and passion to his role as the RSO’s fourth Music Director,” said President of the Richmond Symphony Orchestra’s Board of Directors Jeff Carter.

A search team, led by RSO Board member Jeff Jackson, attracted 53 applicants. By Dec. 2021, the team narrowed the pool to five candidates, each of whom conducted a concert in the 2022-2023 season.

“As we pass the baton to Maestro Lopera, we express our deep thanks to Jeff Jackson and the search committee for their careful work this last year,” said Carter.

RSO will be the first music director role for Lopera.

“Working with all the musicians of the orchestra was an amazing experience,” said Lopera. “Meeting the staff and seeing how much they care for the community they serve only added to my excitement.”
