City council has approved waiving parking meter fees throughout the city from 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 12 until 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 2.

According to Police Chief John Jones, in the past, the city has only waived fees for uptown meters during the holiday period. However, last year it was extended to all meters. Parking garages are included as well. With the smart meters, bags over the meters are no longer required because the screens will display the free holiday parking.

Cars still may not be parked at a meter for more than two hours.
