The Miami University Recreation Center will offer single-day day camps for children in kindergarten through sixth grade on eight days when the Talawanda schools are not in session this school year.

Known as Rec Kids, the program is an expansion of the Recreation Center’s programs that are designed to be helpful not only to Miami employees, but to members of the Oxford community, said Geremy Bardon, associate director of intramural sports. The program is designed to provide a supervised setting for children whose schools are closed, leaving working parents in the lurch.

The Rec Center has run summer day camps for more than 20 years, but this is the first time single-day camps have been offered, Bardon said. “The single day camps are being offered based on a number of requests from past participants (in other activities) who have a lot of interest in our program.”

The dates for the camps are Aug. 30, Oct. 11, Nov. 5,, Jan. 20, Feb. 14, April 10, May 5 and May 22 —all dates correspond to the days that the Talawanda schools will not have classes for various reasons.

Children will be able to spend the day at Rec, swimming in the pool, playing games, and climbing the climbing wall, Bardon said.

The single-day camps will be staffed by professional staff members, as well as student staff members who have worked in one of the Rec’s center existing youth programs such as summer camps, learning to swim, or youth climbing team.

Children should bring a bathing suit, towel, closed-toe gym shoes, a packed lunch and snacks.

The single-day cost is $40 per day for the first child and $30 each for additional child.

Miami Students and faculty will still be able to use the Rec during the camp dates.
