US Olympic hockey team selects Miami alumnus as captain

Andy Miele, former Miami University hockey standout, has been named captain of the 2022 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team, according to USA Hockey. 

The organization made the announcement Thursday, just prior to the team’s opening game against China. The U.S. defeated the host country’s team 8-0.

Miele, a native of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, played at Miami from 2007 through 2011. Miele received the 2011 Hobey Baker Award his senior year, during which he scored 71 points, the second highest season total for a RedHawk. The top NCAA men’s hockey player receives the prestigious annual award.

When not participating in the Olympics, Miele, a forward, plays for Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod in the Russian Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).
