Miami University Family Weekend is here. Family Weekend is one of the five “impact” weekends that provide an economic boom to the city, according to Enjoy Oxford.
Families of Miami students are expected to pack the region’s hotels, bars and restaurants.
Oxford Police officers will not take any time off this weekend in anticipation of the crowds, said Lt. Lara Fening.
The festivities begin Friday and go through Sunday. Here is a list of some of the things going on this weekend for all Miami families to enjoy:
FRIDAY
Recreation Center open
The Rec Center will be open all of Family Weekend from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. For the weekend, a daily pass will cost $6.
Art Museum Exhibitions Open
The Art Museum will be open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. all weekend, and admission is free.
Field Hockey vs. Longwood University
Come out and cheer on the Miami Field Hockey team, as they face off against Longwood University. Admission is free, and be sure to wear red for the red out. The field hockey field is located on the west side of Yager Stadium. The game starts at 1 p.m.
Admission information session and campus tour
The admission office will host a 30-minute info session, as well as a 90-minute campus tour led by students on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the event starts at 2 p.m. in the Shriver Center and goes until 4 p.m. On Saturday, the event starts at 10 a.m. in Taylor Auditorium in Farmer School of Business.
Honors Program reception
Have a student in the University Honors Program? There will be a reception at Old Manse, 410 E. High St. Families will have the opportunity to meet Honors Program staff. Light refreshments will be served. The reception starts at 3 p.m.
Family welcome center
Families are encouraged to stop by the welcome center located in the Armstrong Student Center. From 3:30 to 6 p.m., free refreshments will be served, and information will be around for all of the weekend’s fantastic events.
Phi Kappa Phi induction ceremony
Come out to Hall Auditorium from 4 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. for the Phi Kappa Phi induction ceremony. This induction ceremony will initiate and recognize undergraduate and graduate students. Also, it will recognize Miami University faculty into the honor society as well!
Study Abroad information sessions
Study abroad will have two information sessions in Macmillan Hall to learn more about programs available to Miami University Students. The first session will start at 4:30 p.m. until 5:15 p.m. The second session will run from 5:15 p.m. until 6 p.m. There will be staff available to answer any questions that families or students may have.
Dinner with Miami Activities and Programming
Come out and enjoy a free dinner with Miami Activities and Programming at the Armstrong Student Center Fritz Pavilion from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
Hillel Shabbat services and dinner
The service will begin at 6 p.m. and dinner will be at 6:30 p.m. The service and dinner will be at the Hillel Foundation located at 11E. Walnut St.
Volleyball vs. Eastern Michigan
Cheer on the Miami University volleyball team they face off against Eastern Michigan at Millett Hall. The team has won the Mid-American Conference championship three times. Game time is 7 p.m.
Fencing Club bake sale
The Miami University Fencing team will hand out baked goods at the Phi Delta Gates from 7 p.m. until 3 a.m. The Phi Delt Gates are located at the corner of High Street and Campus Avenue.
Hockey vs Ferris State
The Miami Ice Hockey team takes on Ferris State in a two-game series Friday and Saturday Night at the Goggin Ice Center! The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. Friday and at 8 p.m. Saturday.
Miami Unviersity Glee Club and Collegiate Chorale concert
Come out to Hall Auditorium and enjoy the Glee Club concert at 7:30 p.m.
MAP Presents: Comedy Magician
Looking for a good laugh over family weekend? Come out to Wilks Theater, located in the Armstrong Student Center, and enjoy a live comedy performance and magic show. The show starts at 8:30 p.m. and doors will open at 8 p.m.
Theta Tau Engineering fundraiser
Come to the Phi Delt Gates and get some delicious macaroni and cheese to help raise money for the Tau Delta chapter of Theta Tau from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m.
SATURDAY
Tri-County 5K Fun Run benefits the new Talawanda Oxford and Social Services
Come and support the Oxford Pantry’s transition to the Talawanda Oxford Pantry and Social Services. The race will begin at central quad and ultimately at the Farmers Market! Check-in begins at 8 a.m. and the race will start at 8:30 a.m.
2019 Nursing Program introduction ceremony
This induction ceremony will welcome the Class of 2022. All students will be given their first stethoscope! There will be different speakers as well to talk about nursing as well. The event will start at 9 a.m. in Pearson Hall Room 128.
Coffee with a Cop: Family Weekend edition
Come out to the Uptown Parks and join the Miami University and Oxford Police Departments for free coffee. Guests will be able to meet officers, ask questions and give feedback to our officers. The event will run from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the Uptown Parks.
Oxford Farmers Market & student performances
Come out to the Uptown Parks from 9 a.m. until noon for Yoga in the park, free donuts, and coffee with a variety of student groups performing. Best Buddies Best Friends Choir, Miami Jump Rope, and more! And of course, there will be plenty of produce.
The Haven at College Family Weekend open house
Haven is an outpatient center focused on college students recovering from substance abuse issues. Come meet some of the Haven staff and hear recovery stories from students from 9 a.m. until noon. Snacks and refreshments will be available as well. The Haven at College is located at 16. S. Campus Avenue
Dance Theatre Family Weekend performance
Come enjoy a nice breakfast in 115 Phillips Hall at 9:30 a.m. before a demonstration of different dance moves. Starting at 10 a.m., a dance from Dance Theatre from its upcoming winter concert in December.
Digital Innovations and Interactive Media Studies open house
Come out to Laws Hal, Room 201 from 9:30 a.m. unit 11 a.m. and learn about digital innovation programs that take place in San Francisco, Luxemburg and Cincinnati. These semester-long programs are great ways for students to intern and network in different digital and technology organizations. Coffee and brunch will be provided
Miami Redhawk tailgating
Come out before the football game against Northern Illinois and tailgate. Fans have the opportunity to set up their own tailgate spot or join another tailgate. Tailgate spots will be located in the RedZone and on the west side of Millett Hall, tailgating starts at 9:30 a.m. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
M.O.V.E Outdoor Boot camp
This outdoor boot camp is a great way to start out your morning. Join President Gregory Crawford for a workout at Lewis Place, 301 E. High Street, 10 a.m. Afterward, there will be another event with light snacks and t-shirts given away.
Equestrian Home Intercollegiate Hunt Seat Show-Day 1
This is a two-day event, come and cheer on the hunt seat team in their first show this year on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Equestrian Center located at 4959 Oxford Trenton Road.
Campus Stores Open: Brick & Ivy and 1809 Outfitters
The Brick and Ivy campus store and 1809 Outfitters will be open throughout family weekend from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Don’t leave Oxford without getting some great Miami gear!
Undergraduate Research Showcase- What I did this Summer
Come join the Office for Undergraduate on the first floor of King Library from 10:30 a.m. until noon for a talk with students who did summer research programs that were funded by the Summer Scholars Program and the Howard Hughes Award Program.
Career Success & Your Student: Planning for the Future
Come talk with the Career Center staff in the Armstrong Student Center from 10:30 a.m. until noon about how your student can prepare and get on track for career success and all resources Miami University has to offer. Coffee and tea will be available for guests.
Miami University Gospel Singers Family Weekend Concert
Come out to the Faith Lutheran Church located at 420 S. Campus Avenue for the annual Family Weekend Concert put on by The Miami University Gospel Singers. This will be great praise and worship experience, the theme for this year is “A Promise – Eternal Life.” The concert will start at noon
Hawk Walk
Come and meet the Miami University Football with the marching band and cheerleaders before this game at Millet Parking Lot. The walk starts promptly at noon.
Miami University Marching Band Concert
Come here your Miami University Marching Band team in concert before the football game on the West side of Yager Stadium.
Miami Striders Treadmill Run Fundraiser
The Miami Striders will be selling grilled cheese and water and running twelve hours at the Phi Delt Gates. Come out and support them from 3 p.m until 3 a.m.
Family Weekend Feast
Come enjoy dinner at the Martin Dining Commons! Reservations will not be needed dinner will be available from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.
Library Game Night
Come out to the library of your choosing for Library Game Night. Play board and tabletop games. There will be free food and prizes for all. The event runs from 6 p.m. until 11p.m.
Bingo
Come out at 8 p.m. at the Armstrong Student Center Dining Area with the Residence Hall Association for bingo and a chance to win so Miami University gear and other items
Headline Entertainment – John Mulaney
Come down to Millett Hall at 8:30 p.m. and see stand-up comedian John Mulaney. John Mulaney has worked with Saturday Night Live as well as some of his own stand-up specials including The Comeback Kid and Kid Gorgeous which he won a Primetime Emmy Award for!
Sunday
Hillel Family Weekend Brunch
Come out and enjoy a nice brunch from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Hillel Foundation located at 11 E. Walnut Street before your family heads back home!
MAP and MUSF Brunch and Silent Auction with President & Mrs. Crawford
Come and enjoy a nice brunch buffet and bid on all sorts of items. This will help support Miami University student scholarships. Over the years this auction held during family weekend has raised thousands of dollars. The brunch and auction will run from 10:30 a.m. until noon.
Delta House of Pancakes
Come to the Uptown parks from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. and help the Tri Delta sorority with their annual Delta House of Pancakes. This annual event to sort St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. There will be a raffle and donations from local businesses in Oxford
Volleyball vs. Central Michigan
Come and cheer on your Miami University volleyball team before you head home as they take on Central Michigan at Millett Hall. Game time starts at 2:30 p.m.
