Miami University students held a peaceful protest march on campus to protest Senate Bill 1.
Students met at Pulley Tower on campus to protest the bill, which threatens the diversity, equity and inclusion program (DEI) at Miami. The protest took place on campus with a march from Pulley Tower to the front of the home of Miami President Gregory Crawford
Students created signs and worked with students involved in the Ohio Student Association to create chants such as, “Higher ed will be dead,” and, “SB. 1 is a war on people; it should be illegal.”
The Ohio Senate passed S.B. 1 on Feb. 12. The Ohio House of Representatives Committee on Workforce and Higher Education passed the bill on March 19. The entire Ohio House of Representatives will then vote on the bill.
S.B. 1 aims to change the way colleges and universities educate, like threatening DEI programs, banning faculty from striking and prohibiting conversations about controversial topics in the classroom, as well as making faculty post their syllabi publicly prior to the start of the semester.
