Miami University hosts its 2024 Family Weekend this weekend, and while Miami families and the Miami community take center stage, weekends such as this involve all members of the Oxford community.
Event-filled weekends like Family Weekend can be exciting for all parties providing a taste of what Oxford has to offer on top of Miami University, according to Oxford’s Economic Development Specialist Seth Cropenbaker.
“It’s just being able to celebrate Oxford and the university,” Cropenbaker said. “That’s part of what we do, [the reason] we host events. You can’t get to campus without going through Oxford and while many of the activities, sports… the game’s going to be on campus, speaker’s going to be on campus, entertainment’s going to be on campus, most of what everything else that those families do is going to be in Oxford.”
Family Weekend will run from Friday, Oct. 18 to Sunday, Oct.20, with a slate of events throughout the weekend, including events across Oxford, guest speaker Sal Vulcano Friday night and a Miami football home game against Ohio University Saturday afternoon.
While the university welcomes Miami families, Oxford contributors hope that Miami families will venture into the broader areas, fully embracing the weekend in Miami and in Oxford, according to Executive Director of Enjoy Oxford Kim Daggy.
“Our role in the community is promoting Oxford so it is exciting to share with those coming to town how vibrant the town is for the size that we are,” Daggy said. “It’s an experience for the whole family…so that’s what we hope to communicate and wish that they have while they’re here, try things off campus and enjoy the things on campus and seeing Miami and Oxford through the story of their student and building those bonds and those memories, that’s what I hope they do.”
Making memories from these experiences is paramount, according to Cropenbaker.
“In a place like Oxford, a college town, where, you know, every year we host 16,000 guests in town,” Cropenbaker said. “And those folks create those memories while they’re here, go on, (and) often leave our community to pursue their lives, families and work and [Oxford] gives them a chance for them to come back.”
The headlining events this weekend are Sal Vulcano with a stand-up comedy show at 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18 in Millet Hall and the Miami University home football game against Ohio University at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 in Yager Stadium.
Tickets for Sal Vulcano are $49.50 available here including a parental advisory for content. Miami football game ticket prices range from $33-38 available here for purchase.
