Miami University’s 2024 Homecoming weekend highlights the legacy of Western College and showcases the Miami spirit through a weekend of matches, events and activities for Miami University alumni, students and Oxford.
This upcoming homecoming weekend will highlight the importance of community and unity through the celebration of Western College, Miami University, and Oxford according to Director of Alumni Engagement, Ellie Witter.
“We want to have the entire Miami community come together and celebrate Miami University and Western College,” said Witter. “We’re all here in Oxford … so having the community involved with it too … how do we really make that full celebration of the university, the legacy and history of Western College and Oxford [resonate]?”
A few ways the community can come together is through the cornerstones of homecoming, the parade and football games according to Witter.
The parade will begin 11:30 a.m. on High Street and finish around 12:30 p.m. on Sycamore Street, followed by a tailgate preceding the football game. The Miami RedHawks will wear a special blue Western College-themed uniform for their homecoming game against the University of Massachusetts, honoring the legacy of Western College.
The RedHawks bested the University of Massachusetts 41-28 last September. The homecoming football game will occur 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Yager Stadium.
Something else to take note of this weekend are the various decorated spaces across Miami University and Oxford, such as in uptown. Several shops in uptown have homecoming decorations in their windows.
The weekend will also have several other organizations, such as Miami University’s Black Student Action Association (BSAA) offering events ranging from social gatherings and dodgeball to this weekend’s Homecoming dance, all of which help bring the community together according to the President of the BSAA Jackson Harper.
“The thing that will pull in all of the community is the dance,” said Harper. “We’ll even have a lot of alumni show up for that … and the fact that we have the privilege to have alumni that actively want to help, that actively want to fund stuff, that actively want to meet the current students, really puts a smile on my face and is really exciting to think about.”
Witter said it best though, this weekend is more than just events and celebrations, it is about: “Love, honor and legacy.”
