The Talawanda softball team secured a comeback 6-5 home win against the previously undefeated Mt. Notre Dame Cougars on April 26.
The 12-1 (8-0 GGCL) Cougars from Cincinnati proved to be one of Talawanda’s toughest opponents to date this season, scoring four runs in the second inning and holding a 5-1 lead through the fifth.
After a rocky start, Brave junior Kylie Cobb settled down, allowing only one additional run in the fourth inning en route to her Southwest Ohio Conference (SWOC) leading ninth win this season.
At the plate, the Brave countered with five runs in the bottom of the sixth, including a go-ahead inside the park home run from Grace Richardson and a rare steal of home plate by sophomore Bailey Sawyers.
“As a team, you gotta stay calm and stay on the gas pedal,” Richardson said. The sophomore has a SWOC leading five home runs this season.
Cobb kept the seventh inning short and sweet with a quick three outs to end the game.
“We didn’t do a great job making routine plays early on, but we bounced back and made adjustments to their pitcher,” head coach Scott Davie said.
The Cougars were Talawanda’s fifth opponent of the week.
“I honestly can’t remember our last practice,” Davie said.
After dropping a one run home game to conference rival Harrison on April 29 and defeating non-conference for Badin on May 1, Talawanda’s record stands at 21-4 (8-1 SWOC).The Brave home finale is scheduled for May 2 against Ross.
