After months of study and suggestions from more than 286 local residents, the committee charged with suggesting a name for Oxford’s new pool has recommended it be called the Oxford Aquatic Center.
The Oxford Parks and Recreation Department held a contest to name the new facility, due to open next Memorial Day. The department had said they wanted something catchy that would help draw patrons from around the region.
Parks and Recreation Director Casey Wooddell said the two most popular options from the suggestions were Oxford Aquatic Center and, in second place, Oxford Aquatic Park.
“As we reviewed the data from the survey, it became apparent that it was more important for the word ‘Oxford’ to be in the name and that ‘aquatic center’ described the new facility,” Wooddell said.
The naming committee will present the suggestion to city council on Oct. 16. Council has the final authority on the naming decision.
There will be a public information session to answer questions about the new pool on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the Oxford Community Arts Center.
