The Richard and Carole Cocks Art Museum’s lecture “Corpse Wine: Dionysiac Imagery and the Fermentation of the Dead in Roman Sarcophagi” will take place on April 20 at 10:30 a.m.
Mont Allen, associate professor of classics and art history at Southern Illinois University, will lead the lecture exploring the significance of Roman sarcophagi shaped like wine vats, using art historical, archaeological, and taphonomic evidence, according to a press release.
He will also offer insights into Roman funerary art and its connection to the fermentation of wine.
The lecture is presented in collaboration with the Archaeological Institute of America’s Dayton Society chapter.
