Tous les Jours, the French-Korean bakery chain with nearly 2,000 locations globally, has opened an outpost in Oxford at 5 W. High St.
“Tous les jours” is a French phrase that translates to “every day” in English. The chain, which started in South Korea, sells sweets including purple sweet potato bread, kimchi croquettes and red bean donuts, as well as chocolate croissants, danishes, coffee and tea.
“When I was a student here, I always wanted a bakery,” said store owner Amy Chang, who graduated from Miami in 2017. “I thought a self-serve bakery with coffees and teas and places for students to sit and do work was something Oxford could really enjoy.”
Originally, the bakery was supposed to be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Because of short staffing, the restaurant is only open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Chang said the store employs 15 people and is in the process of hiring more.
Kitchen staff arrive starting at 4 a.m. to begin baking, she said.
The first Tous les Jours in the United States opened in Los Angeles in 2004. Now, the company operates over 100 stores in the United States. Most Tous les Jours locations are in South Korea.
Shortly after the new bakery opened, residents debated the merits of another chain establishment in Oxford. A discussion thread on the question on the Oxford Talk Facebook page Peter Sturni drew 78 comments.
“I wanted something original to Oxford,” Sturni said. “But I really enjoy it. I think it’s a wonderful place. It adds something cool to town.”
