The Oxford Lane Library is hosting two evening discussions covering the book Tigerland: 1968-1969, a City Divided, a Nation Torn Apart, and a Magical Season of Healing. James Tobin, professor of journalism at Miami University, is leading the first discussion on Feb. 25. Author Wil Haygood is leading the second on March 5.
Both discussions are from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. They are free and open to the public.
Tigerland has been a popular read throughout the community. It was a required reading for the 2018 incoming freshman class at Miami University. The library also hosted a community read of the book, and according to Rebecca Smith, branch manager for the Oxford Lane Library, some English classes at Talawanda High School have read the book as well.
Haygood is not only an author, but also a Pulitzer Prize finalist, renowned journalist, and Miami alum of the class of ’76. He is now a visiting distinguished professor at Miami University.
“Haygood is one of Miami’s most prominent alumni, so a number of people in Oxford have taken an interest in his writing career and his successes,” said Tobin. “It’s important for Americans of whatever race to learn more about that formative time [late 1960’s during the civil rights movement] in our shared history of race relations, since race continues to be such an important element in our national life today.”
A reception will be held after the discussion on March 5. The library will provide tea, water, and an assortment of sweets and fruits. Along with the treats, Haygood will be signing his authored books: Tigerland and Showdown: Thurgood Marshall and the Supreme Court Nomination That Changed America
The Friends of the Oxford Lane Library will be selling both publications during the reception. The nonprofit organization will sell Tigerland for $16.77 and Showdown for $10.20. Cash and check will be accepted.
The Friends of the Oxford Lane Library has a mission to increase support for the library and spread interest in the local community.
“The Oxford Lane Library welcomes the opportunity to host Wil Haygood and bring together community members,” Smith said.
Haygood will also be discussing Tigerland at Miami’s Wilks Theater March 6. With him will be three of the athletes from the championship basketball and baseball teams, as well as coach Paul Pennell.
