Acclaimed author and journalist Wil Haygood, Miami Alum of 1976, was honored by Miami University with the Freedom Summer of ’64 Award on Nov. 14.
The presentation was part of an event at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati. It included a talk by Haygood titled “Why 1964 Still Matters.” He also reflected upon his national and international reporting career.
According to a news release, the award will be given each year to a distinguished leader who inspired the nation to advance civil rights and social justice. It is intended to recognize the spirit of the 800 volunteers who trained at Oxford’s Western College for Women, now part of Miami’s Western Campus.
