Looking to cater to busy college students and commuting employees, the Oxford Farmers Market is expanding its operations to include 4-7 p.m. Tuesdays, at Uptown Park. The market’s regular 8 a.m. to noon Saturday operation will continue.
Oxford City Council unanimously approved the expansion on Tuesday. Beginning Sept. 25, the market will be allowed to set up in the city-owned parking lot that it uses next to Uptown Park.
Market Manager Larry Slocum said busy students and commuting faculty cannot always attend the market on the weekend, and the extra day will give them the opportunity to participate. He expects about 10 vendors to be selling their produce on Tuesdays through December. Farmers’ greenhouses, Slocum said, allow them to extend their growing season through the winter and early spring seasons.
Slocum said the market’s vendors also expressed interest in offering more local foods to residents.
