The Miami University Libraries will be celebrating 50 years of the Walter Havighurst Special Collections and University Archives at 4 p.m. on Sept. 26 at King Library in room 320.
William Pratt, an emeritus professor, will be delivering his presentation “Two Scholars: Havighurst and Shriver,” which discusses the legacies of these figures in Miami University’s history.
Walter Havighurst joined the Miami faculty in 1928 and retired in 1969. He was the author of many books, including “The Miami Years,” called one of the “finest college histories ever written” on Miami University’s website. Named in his honor were both Havighurst Hall as and the Havighurst Special Collections Library, established in 1970.
Phillip Shriver was the 17th president of Miami University, from 1965 to 1981. Under his leadership, Miami opened new campuses in Hamilton, Middletown and Luxembourg. Shriver used “The Miami Years” to teach about Miami’s history during and after his presidency. Miami’s former student union, now a multi-use building, is named in his honor.
