The National Audubon Society’s annual Great Backyard Bird Count event will be observed in Oxford at Hueston Woods State Park Feb. 19.

The event will be hosted by Audubon Miami Valley and is part of a three-day nationwide program. Birdwatchers will take advantage of the park’s new nature center to conduct their search for various bird species. The nature center is recognized by the National Audubon Society as an “Important Bird Area” and is home to the Avian Research and Education Institute Bird Banding Station.

Participants will meet at noon for a guided tour of the new facilities, then will proceed to look for birds until 4 p.m. at various locations on the park grounds. The bird search will be aided by eBird, a comprehensive birding database that adds over 100 million contributions each year.

AMV recommends bringing good walking shoes, personal water supply, insect repellent, and sunscreen to the event, as well as a personal lunch for a picnic. All participants are welcome.
