Local police train for protesters, shooters and critical events

Oxford, Oxford Township and Miami University police have participated in a variety of training this summer, including drills on confronting street protesters and dealing with active shooters.

This summer, in-service training for Miami University officers covered mental health first aid, mobile field force for mass gatherings, and critical incident response, as well as active threat training, said Chief Stephen VanWinkle.

Training was conducted in partnership with law enforcement from Oxford, Oxford Township, the University of Cincinnati, Hamilton and Fairfield, as well as the Oxford Fire Department, Kettering Health, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, and the Butler County Emergency Management Agency.

In response to the May shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, SWAT members assisted officers in completing active threat training drills.
