The state and federal elections in Butler County were hit by a wave of red in Tuesday’s election, with Republican candidates winning almost every single race.
Oxford residents voted Democratic almost twice as much as Republicans in the precincts, but that did not help any Democrats in the election.
Butler County had a 71% voter turnout overall. Oxford precinct ranged in turnout from a low of 17% in precinct 11 to a high of 78.7% in precinct 10.
Ohio House of Representative candidate Vanessa Cummings hit the pavement on Election Day, hopping from poll to poll to talk to voters.
Although she didn’t win her race, she said no matter the outcome of the election or the presidential race, she hopes those in power will represent their electorates rather than their political party affiliation.
“People are so tied to parties,” Cummings said while outside Talawanda Middle School. “Now, it’s about ‘What do the parties say we are supposed to do – and so we’re going to do what the party says,’ but that may not always be in the best interest of the people.”
When Cummings knocked on doors during her campaign, she often faced people who were not a part of the same party, but had proactive conversations.
“We shared ideas and realized we have so much more in common than we do apart, and some were even surprised that we actually had a simple conversation because I don’t think they thought that was even possible,” Cummings said.
