Miami University will host the Jubilee Singers of Fisk University Friday, Sept. 20. The Grammy Award-winning group will perform spirituals sung by slaves prior to the Civil War.
The original Fisk Jubilee Singers have been performing since 1871. They were one of the first groups to perform secret ‘slave songs’ at Oberlin College. Since then, they have performed throughout the U.S. and Europe, including in front of kings and queens. They have received multiple awards, including the National Medal of Arts, and were featured in a PBS documentary titled, “Jubilee Singers: Sacrifice and Glory.”
The event will also feature performances by the Miami Men’s Glee Club, Chamber Singers and Choraliers. Miami’s choral program has three ensembles and 200 members overall.
This concert is also part of the Reimagining the Academy Conference, which brings together Miami, Kent State University and Bowling Green State University.
The performance will take place in Hall Auditorium, located at 101 S. Campus Ave. The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $10 to $15 with a discount for seniors, students and children. These tickets can be purchased here.
