As you hunker down to stay warm and safe during this year’s first major winter storm, don’t forget your pets.

Winter weather doesn’t only pose a threat to humans. Many pets are also susceptible to the cold weather. The ASPCA has advice for keeping pets safe and healthy even during winter storms.

General tips are to keep pets’ fur long and to remove snow and ice from their paws when they come inside. For short-furred pets it is recommended to get them a coat or keep them inside as much as possible to avoid freezing. When pets come inside from the snow, make sure to dry them off with a towel to avoid chill and skin irritation.

The final rule the ASPCA clarified is “if it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for your pet.”
